A study by the Ebrictus group at IDIAPJGol has received the Best Poster Award in the Risk Factors and Prevention Primary and Secondary category at the 14th Conference of the European Stroke Organisation (ESOC), held from 6 to 8 May in Maastricht. The award-winning study, entitled “Sex-specific risk profiles and estimated stroke prevention potential in incident atrial fibrillation”, was one of only six posters selected from more than two thousand submissions.

The study, coordinated by Ebrictus principal investigator Josep Lluís Clua Espuny, presents a Markov decision-analytic model based on real-world primary care data from the Terres de l’Ebre region to assess an artificial intelligence-based strategy for the early detection of thromboembolic risk. Compared with usual care, this strategy would reduce cases of ischaemic stroke, major adverse cardiovascular events and long-term disability.

The findings also show that, from both the healthcare system and societal perspectives, the intervention would lead to greater cost savings among women due to the reduction in stroke-related disability and long-term care needs, in a context of higher baseline thromboembolic risk.
