Real World Lab IDIAPJGol

About us:

The Real World Lab (RWL) is a living lab focused on Primary Care. It was created in order to provide support to entrepreneurs, researchers, and also investors to test and validate healthcare technologies into a real-world environment. This includes among others, AI, apps, platforms, medical devices, or processes.

Why RWL?

The unsuccessful development of some health technologies is that there are not been developed and tested properly before reach the market. Sometimes are developed by engineers, programmers,.. who develop applications, platforms or medical devices with a minimal or without a clinical support. Once finished some of them are tested in a very limited way (only few people, same territory, relatives,...) and focused only on the technology but with some shortcomings (final price, how to implement, way of implementation, without asking the specific needs of patients or professionals...).

The Real World is a living lab that has been created with the idea to solve all these problems. It supports not only clinical trials, but user experience analysis, real patient and professional need and socio-economic impact. Once you get our approval, you can get a quality stamp that demonstrates that it works, or you can go back with real information in order to make changes.

The main difference with other living labs is that we are focusing in Primary Care of an entire region, which means that, in our case we have:

  • access to 6 M patients
  • access to more than 300 primary care centers
  • access to 35 research teams and 1322 researchers
  • access to more than 10,000 Primary Care professionals
  • access to one of the largest Real World Data base in primary care for 6M patients and more than 200 variables
  • a specific and multidisciplinary team (general practitioners, nurses, economists, epidemiologists, psychologists social scientists, business developers,...) supporting the living lab

In addition Primary Care, as the first step to access the NHS, is very close to the patients, leading recruitment and adherence for health studies and probably the most relevant place to implement health technologies due to the high impact and full transversality on society compared to hospitals.

The Real World Lab will provide partners with the opportunity to test their health technology products in a real-life environment. In this way, they will learn about the real clinical feasibility of their developments, the acceptance of patients and healthcare professionals. It can also be applied in different National Health Services (NHS), and collect feedback on user experience, so that they know the suitability of their developments and if necessary, how to improve them.
