The Catalan Society of Family and Community Medicine (CAMFiC) has presented its annual awards, which recognize the best doctoral thesis and the best original article published in 2023 in the field of primary care. The presentation of these recognitions took place on May 28, during the closing ceremony of the 2023–2024 academic year of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

The award for the Best Doctoral Thesis defended during 2023 was granted ex aequo to Dr. Carme Vela Vallespín and Dr. Juan José Zamora Sánchez. The first thesis is titled Evaluation of the care process for women with suspected ovarian cancer in Primary Care in Catalonia, and is supervised by Dr. Mercè Marzo and Dr. Josep M Borràs. The results of this thesis support the decision of the Oncology Master Plan to soon implement a rapid diagnosis program for women with suspected ovarian cancer and other gynecological cancers within the Catalan public healthcare system.

The second thesis is the first in the field of nursing to be awarded by CAMFiC. Titled The multidimensional approach to frailty in primary health care, it was supervised by Dr. Vicente Gea, Dr. Iván Julián and Dr. Edurne Zabaleta. The results of this doctoral thesis provide very significant knowledge in the assessment of the frailty index and in the identification of multidimensional tools that allow the evaluation of people’s frailty from primary care. These results have been published in five original articles in indexed journals with a high impact factor.

The CAMFiC Award for the best Original Article published in 2023 went to Dr. Concepció Violán Fors, former director of IDIAPJGol and researcher at the Institute. The article is Contribution of Frailty to Multimorbidity Patterns and Trajectories: Longitudinal Dynamic Cohort Study of Aging People, published in JMIR Public Health and Surveillance.

The study aimed to examine how frailty affects the progression of multimorbidity patterns in older adults. The results of the work indicate that frailty has a significant impact on the onset and evolution of multimorbidity. The study suggests that addressing frailty could reduce the burden of multimorbidity in aging populations.

The ACMCiB and CAMFiC Josep Davins Miralles Award went to Dr. Joan Pau Golf. This award aims to promote already implemented projects that can be evaluated for their effectiveness, contributing to the positive development of primary care.

Finally, the Jaume Aiguader i Miró 2024 Award was granted to Dr. Montserrat Romaguera. This award recognizes the article, literary work, radio or television program, video, film, recording or any other means of dissemination produced in the Catalan language and broadcast through the media within the Academy’s area of activity. Special value is placed on the health importance of the topic and the interest of its treatment, highlighting contributions in the field of health communication and education.
