IDIAPJGol participates in the DARWIN EU project to improve drug safety and effectiveness
This initiative by the European Medicines Agency aims to provide real-world evidence on diseases, populations, and the use and performance of drugs in Europe
The leader of IDIAPJGol’s Real-World Epidemiology Research Group, Talita Duarte-Salles, is participating in the DARWIN EU network (Data Analysis and Real-World Interrogation Network). This network collects anonymized data from 160 million people across 16 countries, sourced from general practitioners, hospitals, official registries, and biobanks.
Driven by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), DARWIN EU aims to generate real-world evidence on diseases, populations, and the use and effectiveness of medicines in Europe. To achieve this, it integrates routinely collected healthcare data from various settings within the European healthcare system, supporting regulatory decision-making. This includes creating and expanding a catalog of observational data sources for drug evaluation, as well as conducting high-quality non-interventional studies on drug safety, use, and effectiveness.
Catalonia contributes to this project with the SIDIAP database, which contains information on more than 8 million patients treated in primary care centers. So far, DARWIN EU has completed four studies on cancer, antibiotic use, and severe asthma, using real-world data to deepen the understanding of these diseases and the effects of treatments. The standardization of data within a common model allows for more agile and efficient research.
