An intervention from Primary Care allows to improve the control of patients with Diabetis Mellitus 2

A study conducted by ICS Primary Care professionals has evaluated the efficacy of an intervention designed to improve glycemic control in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2). The clinical trial was carried out in 11 Primary Care Centers in Barcelona, Girona and Lleida and the intervention was carried out in 225 patients with poor glycemic control.

INTEGRA

The INTEGRA study, led by professionals from the Diabetes Epidemiological Research Group from Primary Care (DAP-CAT) of the IDIAP Jordi Gol, in collaboration with the Biomedical Network Research Center for Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases (CIBERDEM), a group led by dr. Dídac Mauricio, aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a comprehensive multidisciplinary intervention in patients with poor control of DM2 in the Primary Health Care Area. The results of the study have been published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism.

The clinical trial was carried out in 11 Primary Care Centers in the health regions of Barcelona, Girona and Lleida and the intervention was carried out in 225 patients diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with poor glycemic control (HbA1c greater than 9%). This intervention included a monographic consultation led by medical professionals and nurses from Primary Care, as well as other interventions to improve patient adherence and reduce the clinical inertia of professionals. Prior to carrying out the intervention, a qualitative study was carried out to design it.

The patients who underwent the intervention presented a statistically significant reduction in their HbA1c compared to the control group and a higher percentage of patients obtained an HbA1c lower than 8% in the intervention group (44.8% compared to 25.5% in the control group). .

Thus, the study concludes that a multidisciplinary intervention that includes a monographic consultation carried out by Primary Care professionals aimed at reducing therapeutic inertia can improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with poor glycemic control.

The study is the objective of the doctoral thesis of Àngels Molló Iniesta, a family doctor at ABS Tàrrega, one of the main researchers of the INTEGRA study and a researcher at the Diabetes Epidemiological Research Group from Primary Care (DAP-CAT) of IDIAP Jordi Gol .
