The European project BEAMER, in which we participate, launches its Newsletter
BEAMER is a BEhavioral and Adherence Model for improving quality, health outcomes and cost-Effectiveness of healthcaRe and it is a European project with 28 partners, including IDIAPJGol. The objective is to address the health challenge that patients do not correctly follow the indications for taking both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
The non-adherence of patients to treatments supposes 200,000 premature deaths annually in Europe, in addition to a higher economic burden for the system since it implies higher admissions, emergencies and external visits. Currently there is not enough knowledge to improve adherence in health care, and that is why theproject BEAMER arises.
The primary goal is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence patient adherence, regardless of therapeutic area, and design solutions that could invite broad and consistent impact within a real-world context. To achieve these goals, the project will create a generalized model of the factors that affect non-adherent behaviour, based on behavioral theory. By developing such a model, the project team will be able to define the problem of nonadherence and develop and implement cost-effective tools and solutions that directly target its causes. These tools and solutions will provide guidance to healthcare stakeholders and help improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare system costs.
The model will be intended to be adaptable with specific inputs for different diseases to increase prediction power and optimize patient support strategies. It is this degree of flexibility that will then allow the model to be widely applicable and responsive to ongoing changes in diverse populations.
