The IDIAPJGol coordinates a participatory study on endometriosis
The IDIAPJGol, in collaboration with the Endo&Cat association (affected by endometriosis) and other institutions, is carrying out a research project to explore the experiences of endometriosis, the diagnostic process and access to health services for women living with endometriosis in Catalonia.
The study was born from the needs of those affected by endometriosis and in it, those affected have an active role both in generating the questions and objectives of the research, as well as in the collection and analysis of data. For the research, the Photovoice method has been used, a qualitative research method in which both photographs taken by the participants themselves and group dialogue are used, with the ultimate goal of having an incidence at the health, social and political level.
In total, six group sessions are held between May 4 and June 15. But we will continue to work together with the participants during the dissemination of the results.
About endometriosis
It is estimated that endometriosis affects 10-15% of women in the menstrual period, but even so, it is a chronic disease that is invisible both at a social and health level. In addition, despite the fact that there are some indications, the causes of endometriosis are still unknown, so the approach to the disease is usually aimed at managing pain and other symptoms. On the other hand, the diagnosis process can take an average of 9 years, significantly affecting the quality of life of women. The emotional, social, occupational and economic impact of endometriosis is usually significant, so it is necessary to work with those affected to identify strategies for the promotion of health and well-being. The invisibility of endometriosis, strongly linked to gender inequities in health, has been questioned by those affected, who claim the need to promote research in this area. Also, the improvement of services and holistic socio-health care that takes into account the emotional and social impact of endometriosis.
The project is coordinated from the IDIAPJGol with Laura Medina Perucha as IP and with the participation of the GrenSSAP and GRASSIR groups. Also participating are the Association of Women Affected by Endometriosis of Catalonia (Endo&Cat), the Sexual and Reproductive Health Care Centers (ASSIR), the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and the Center for Analysis and Health Programs.
