Miguel Ángel Muñoz protagonist of #ICSfluencers
Miguel Ángel Muñoz, head of the Unitat de Suport a la Recerca en Atenció Primària of the ICS-IDIAP Jordi Gol in Barcelona, has starred in the #ICSfluencers last week. During the week, topics of his homework have been discussed, looking for the deepest lates motivs such as human curiosity or the scientific method. For Miguel Ángel, it is almost a “moral obligation of medical and nursing professionals –as scientists that they are– to ask ourselves questions and try to respond with the method and with the greatest possible rigor”.
What can we do to predict whether a particular population will develop a disease, or what can we do to prevent a population that has one disease from dying before another? Although the investigation may seem like something very far from our reach, Miguel Ángel explains that it is as simple as picking up the phone, calling the USR and asking the question, doubt or hypothesis that has been generated. From here, they refer her to the professional or specialist who understands the subject the most and to the most appropriate group. They currently have nine research groups structured according to thematic; for example, diabetes, cardiovascular issues, frailty and the elderly, musculoskeletal system, infectious diseases, lifestyles, health cures, mental disorders ... According to Miguel Ángel, it is misleading to think that research carried out from primary care only answers questions social because, although it is true that “laboratory” research is not carried out, it does work “with” hospital research institutes and universities.
Miguel Ángel explains that for him research is like the gift of an artist; it is born. Since the beginning of his career as a doctor, many questions were always asked, but at that time, he still did not know how to answer them. For him, it was his residential tutors who inoculated him with “the virus of curiosity, research and method”. And since then, it has brought you here. Currently, he is working in the world of cardiovascular prevention and social inequalities in health: what can cause them? What can be done from primary care to reduce them?
For him, research in itself is a very satisfying process from the start; that is to say, from the posing of the question to the writing of the final document with all the results and conclusions. For all this, Miguel Ángel has been recognized with the ICS Research Career in Primary Care Award this year, an award that, for him, is not only for his work as a researcher, but for his task as coordinator and facilitator let others do research.
