The Club Crític, coordinated by Constanza Jacques Aviñó and Ana Lozano from the Transversal Research Unit (UTR), hosted a special session on September 16, 2025, with María Sol Anigstein, a researcher at the School of Public Health and the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Chile, who is currently undertaking a residency at IDIAPJGol.
In the workshop titled “Socioecology of Care,” Anigstein invited participants to reflect—through both theoretical discussion and participatory activities—on the importance of considering the care of both human and non-human beings. The session was framed within the conceptual scope of the One Health initiative, which promotes a holistic understanding of human, animal, and environmental health, as well as collective well-being. This approach originated in Latin America to address health from a community-centered perspective.
Tackling global challenges
One Health is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach designed to address global challenges such as the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and increasing pollution. It emphasizes the interdependence of humans, animals, and ecosystems, advocating for more just, sustainable, and resilient socioecological systems. This perspective expands our understanding of health and care beyond the human sphere and values research that takes the environment into account.
This integrative approach also calls for transforming governance structures and traditional economic frameworks to ensure that public policies and investments are aligned with the health and shared well-being of all living beings and the planet.
Launched in 2023 within the UTR, the Club Crític provides a space for critical discussion of research theories and practices. It places particular emphasis on qualitative methodologies, focusing on social health inequities and adopting an intersectional perspective.
