Myosafe is born, a new Girona-based spin-off dedicated to creating digital health tools for acute care processes

The results of the research carried out by the Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI), the Dr. Josep Trueta Hospital, the Jordi Gol Institute for Primary Care Research (IDIAPJGol) and the University of Girona (UdG) have made it possible to design an innovative tool for the rapid assistance of these pathologies

Salt, 09 September 2024. The Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI), the Dr. Josep Trueta Hospital, the Jordi Gol Institute for Primary Care Research (IDIAPJGol) and the University of Girona (UdG) have created a spin-off dedicated to the development of digital health tools for the care of acute processes. This new technology company, called Myosafe, was established this summer and is the result of the research carried out in this field, led by Dr. Jaime Aboal, IDIBGI researcher and cardiologist at the Trueta Hospital, and Dr. Rafel Ramos, researcher at IDIBGI, IDIAPJGol and the UdG.

The prehospital care of a patient encompasses everything that happens until the person is treated, including transfer to the healthcare centre or diagnosis. This phase is key to the prognosis and evolution of a pathology, especially if it is an acute clinical problem, that is, an illness that begins rapidly and suddenly, such as a myocardial infarction. New technologies open a new field of possibilities to explore new tools that can be integrated into this process to make it more efficient.

This has been the focus of the research by Drs. Aboal and Ramos, who in recent years have investigated ways to design and implement digital solutions to optimise the process followed by patients with acute illnesses from the first contact with healthcare professionals.
One successful example has been the creation of the ODISEA App, a digital tool that streamlines the management of acute myocardial infarction from the moment the person gives the alert signal. This application has been recognised with six awards from cardiology societies and public institutions for its innovative character in managing the infarction code using telemedicine tools.

“The establishment of this new spin-off is the result of years of research and aims to bring new technologies to as many patients as possible so that they can benefit from them,” stresses Dr. Jaime Aboal.

“This new applied technological innovation company helps position the Girona Health Region as a driver of entrepreneurial activity in health,” states Dr. Rafel Ramos, who adds that “the Myosafe spin-off has been possible thanks to the close collaboration between different key institutions in Girona’s research and health ecosystem.”

About the IDIBGI

The Dr. Josep Trueta Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI) carries out translational research to improve people’s health and care. The IDIBGI is organised into 24 research groups distributed across five scientific areas (Cardiovascular and Respiratory, Metabolism and Inflammation, Neurosciences, Oncohaematology and Mental Health), bringing together more than 400 people, including healthcare professionals and basic researchers, in the counties of Girona.

The IDIBGI is a private-law foundation in the public sector of the Government of Catalonia, and its board includes the Departments of Health and Research, the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) Girona, the Health Care Institute (IAS), the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) Girona, and the University of Girona. IDIBGI is a CERCA centre (Research Centres of Catalonia).

About the IDIAPJGol

The Jordi Gol Institute for Primary Care Research (IDIAPJGol) is the reference centre for the study and promotion of health at the first level of care in Catalonia. With nearly 1,400 researchers, the IDIAPJGol works to promote and develop innovation, training and clinical, epidemiological and health services research in the field of Primary Care, with the aim of improving the healthcare system and people’s health.

The IDIAPJGol has research support units (USR) distributed throughout Catalonia, which coordinate research groups and projects in each territory, assisting Primary Care professionals in their research activities.
