Gestational diabetes and complications among pregnant women attended in primary care sexual and reproductive health services in Catalonia

  • IP: Josep Franch Nadal
  • Duración: 2021-2024

Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a common complication during pregnancy characterised by high blood sugar levels that can promote complications during pregnancy in both women and the fetus, such as preeclampsia, newborns aged gestational, an increase of cesarean section, and others.
Likewise, women diagnosed with GDM have a higher risk of developing glycemic disorders in the postpartum period and their children in the long term. For this reason, it is recommended to perform an oral glucose tolerance test at 6-8 weeks postpartum to reclassify the metabolic situation of these women.
This population-based study will provide information on the prevalence and characteristics of GDM in our region. It will help us understand how GDM affects pregnancy outcomes and postpartum glucose tolerance. All this information will allow us to assess the clinical characteristics of women with GDM and their risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its related complications at follow-up. In addition, the findings of the study will be also helpful in terms of future health care planning, including strategies to improve follow-up.
