Research area: Cardiovascular
Research group: ARTPER
Peripheral artery disease
Description
The study group ARTPER was created at the end of 2005 and made up of researchers from the 28 primary health care teams from North Barcelona, Maresme and also Barcelona City. In this group there are various professionals in the field of cardiovascular disease research from IDIAP Jordi Gol, the CARDIOCAT group from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII)-accredited redIAPP network, work groups from the Catalan Society for Family and Community Medicine and the cardiovascular diseases research group of the Research Support Group of North Metropolitan Barcelona. It has collaborated and will continue to collaborate with the area of neuroscience research of the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital in Badalona. The group’s objectives center on the prevention and early diagnosis of arteriosclerotic disease. Initially the group concentrated on the utility of the measurement of the Wrist/Arm Index as a diagnostic and prognostic test of peripheral vascular disease. For the development of preventive strategies high-risk groups must be identified and action must be taken while the disease is asymptomatic. Identification of the disease in its asymptomatic phase in order to act before vascular events occur is the principal objective of research in this field.
